Well, it’s time for the obligatory Top 10 Best list. I usually post mine a bit later in January, but this year, time ran away with me as next week is already February! But hey, I think it’s still fine to post one’s top 10 list before the Oscars anyway.

Since there are still plenty of 2019 movies I have not seen yet, I should preface this post with the fact that I haven’t seen The Lighthouse, The Two Popes, Dolemite Is My Name, Uncut Gems, Honey Boy, The Irishman, etc. which might alter my current Top 10.

Yesterday, everyone knew The Beatles. Today, only Jack remembers their songs.

Jack Malik (Himesh Patel, from BBC’s Eastenders) is a struggling singer-songwriter in a tiny English seaside town whose dreams of fame are rapidly fading, despite the fierce devotion and support of his childhood best friend, Ellie (Lily James, from Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again). Then, after a freak bus accident during a mysterious global blackout, Jack wakes up to discover that The Beatles have never existed… and he finds himself with a very complicated problem, indeed.

Union were the sole VFX vendor chosen to help create the mysterious blackout and enable Jack to perform to huge crowds of adoring fans.

Union illustrated the world’s blackout by gradually turning the lights out across the globe.  The additional context was provided by greenscreen shot sequences in Red Square and at a US baseball game.

031_fod_0020_still_v01 (1)One Of Us, is a very busy studio in the middle of London.   They have recently worked on Matteo Garrone’s upcoming feature Pinocchio. The feature movie released in Italian has just had its international premiere at the Berlin Film Festival.


Drawing on Carlo Collodi’s original story from the 19th century, and the visuals based on Carlo Chiostri’s illustrations, the work by One Of Us ran to over 200 shots, which is nearly half an hour of screen time and features some of the most beautiful and ambitious work in their 15-year history. The screenplay sets a charming original children’s view of the tale, with a mix of puppetry, fully digital creatures and a mix of many prosthetic-digital hybrids.

Garrone’s Pinocchio has a fox and a cat portrayed with little more than make-up while a donkey, dogfish and some woodpeckers are completely CG.

Technicolor’s MPC has won the Oscar® for Visual Effects on 1917 at the 92nd Academy Awards.   Also, Roger Deakins won Best Cinematography for work on the same production.

Production VFX Supervisor Guillaume Rocheron accepted the award on behalf of MPC Film’s talented team of VFX artists, production crew and software engineers based in Montreal, London, Los Angeles and Bangalore.    “What an honor to be recognized by the Academy for our work on 1917!,” Rocheron said. “I am grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Sam Mendes on such a unique and memorable film and I am proud to share this award with the team at MPC that made this cinematic experience possible.”

Digital Actors have been a research topic at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg’s Animationsinstitut, and Volker Helzle has been a chief researcher at the Filmakademie for many years.

In particular, Helzle and his team have focused on tool development for believable facial animation, using a reference to one of the greatest minds of the ages, Albert Einstein. This homage to the physicist and humanist investigates how documentary film formats can extend their horizon by meaningful inclusion of these digital actors.
